Watching parents at a youth fencing tournament, it’s easy to see different styles of support, from tactical coaching to quiet observation. These differences are most visible in younger age groups where parents are still figuring out how to help. As kids move into Cadet and Junior, parents tend to converge toward a quieter, more supportive role while athletes take more ownership. The key insight is that kids often drop off when parents don’t evolve. In individual sports, the most effective support shifts over time from directing performance to enabling independence.
